Thematic Units

Sigma Orionis announced a new organisation structure and changes in several leadership roles.
Those changes are part of a continued programme to drive improved execution of the company’s strategy and to raise its operating and financial performance.

Under the new organisation structure, Sigma Orionis’ projects are combined into project units to strengthen Sigma Orionis’ positioning, better develop expertise, and better align the project portfolio with the overall strategy of the company.

Sigma Orionis’ Societal Challenges (SOC) Unit studies the two-way relationships between ICT and society in their social, environmental, economical and democratic dimensions. Our multi-disciplinary team crossing ICT and SSH experts contributes to highlight the long-term impacts of technology on society, and explores solutions to put citizens’ needs and expectations at the core of research and innovation.

Unit Director: Karine Valin
Karine is Senior Project Director. Since 1999, and as a member of the Board of Directors of Sigma Orionis, Karine has contributed developing the strategic vision and positioning of the company while directly managing a number of complex international projects. Karine has a deep knowledge of EU research and innovation policies at a global level gained through her strong involvement in projects funded through EU framework programmes (FP5-7 & H2020). In particular, Karine has coordinated many ICT initiatives and consortia between the EU and Africa/Asia to foster and enhance collaboration opportunities, resulting in sustainable initiatives. Karine also supervises today two Sigma Orionis thematic units: Energy & Environment (E&E) and Societal Challenges (SOC).

Unit Manager: Anthony Dupont
Anthony Dupont is a French engineer with 6 years of experience in the energy sector. In his experience working for top private and public organizations (GDF SUEZ, ADEME, AFD) as well as for small NGOs, he always advocated for a stronger integration of societal aspects in technological projects. Joining Sigma Orionis in 2014, he has since developed his inter-disciplinary skills and sharpened his societal focus.

Sigma Orionis’ Energy & Environment (E&E) Unit manages research projects addressing energy efficiency, smart buildings/cities and communities, sustainable economy, waste and recycling and water management, all sectors in which the organisation has a long-standing experience and expertise both at European and international levels.

Unit Director: Karine Valin

Unit Manager: Holy Andrianantenaina
Holy Andrianantenaina is a French engineer who holds two Master’s degrees; one in Business Administration and one in Strategic Management of Sustainable Development. Holy worked in Europe and the United States for companies involved in the sectors of innovation and sustainable development. Holy joined Sigma Orionis in 2013 as Manager of the projects addressing smart buildings and districts.

Sigma Orionis’ International Cooperation (INCO) Unit aims at strengthening S&T cooperation and policy dialogues in the field of ICT between Europe and both Africa (particularly sub-Saharan Africa) and Asia (particularly China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, New-Zealand and Southeast Asia).

Unit Director: Camille Torrenti
Camille Torrenti graduated from the SKEMA International Business School (with a Master in Business Intelligence) and from the EDHEC Business School (with a bachelor in International Marketing). Camille joined Sigma Orionis in 2007 and acts today as partner/coordinator in several FP7/H2020 projects in the ICT theme, often leading the Dissemination and Exploitation WP. Camille was appointed Project Director in 2013 and supervises today two Sigma Orionis thematic units on International Cooperation (INCO) and Emerging Technologies and Media (ETM).

Sigma Orionis’ Emerging Technologies and Media (ETM) Unit focuses on technical challenging projects related to Internet Science, Media & Content, Convergence (of Broadband, Broadcast and Social Media) and Robotics. Through this Unit Sigma Orionis contributes bringing cutting-edge technology beyond state-of-the-art towards a better and easier world for everyone.

Unit Director: Camille Torrenti

Hugo Vivier holds a Master’s Degree in Computer Sciences specialised in web technologies, and a MBA in management. After a first experience in a French start-up as a Marketing Engineer, he created a webmarketing agency dedicated to SMEs. Following his eagerness for linking technology providers with potential adopters, he joined Sigma Orionis in 2014 to manage FP7 projects.

Sigma Orionis’ Creative and Civic Innovation (CCI) Unit experiments pioneering creative and interdisciplinary models for bridging technology research to innovation and to civic society. Empowering citizens through collective intelligence and unleashing the power of European creative excellence are its two major areas of action.

Unit Director: Roger Torrenti

Unit Manager: Marta Arniani
Marta Arniani holds a Master’s Degree in Philosophy focused on contemporary Aesthetics and Politics in the urban context. Before her arrival at Sigma Orionis, Marta worked as e-Journalist and has been at the core of grassroots projects centred on creativity as engine for civic engagement. Her creative thinking and problem solving skills, together with the ability to connect different disciplines have found a stimulating application ground in Sigma Orionis’ activities.
