The Center for Democracy, Development and Culture in Africa, located in Gorée, Senegal hosted on May 28, 2015, the meeting of the official launch of the TANDEM project, by the project consortium.
TANDEM (TransAfrican Network Development) is a project funded by the Horizon 2020 R&D funding programme of the European Commission, addressing the topic of e-Infrastructure policy development and international cooperation. It is coordinated by the IRD – Institute de Recherche pour le Développement (France) and it aims at supporting dialogue between the EU and African Research and Education Networks, with special attention to the Western and Central Africa region. The scope is to create favorable conditions for WACREN (West and Central African Research and Education Network) to be able to participate in the forthcoming AfricaConnect project extension and to draw maximum benefit from it, and thereby to ensure WACREN’s integration into the global Research and Education networking community.
The TANDEM project builds on the experience of projects already carried out in Africa, that many of TANDEM partners have already been involved in and on synergies with complementary H2020 initiatives like the recently launched Sci-GaIA (Energising Scientific Endeavour through Science Gateways and e-Infrastructures in Africa) and MAGIC (Middleware for collaborative Applications and Global Virtual Communities).
The TANDEM consortium brings together a prestigious team of beneficiaries with first-hand experience on e-Infrastructures for research and education and on Africa-EU cooperation. The partnership is composed of: IRD – Coordinator (France), WACREN (Ghana), GEANT (UK), RENATER (France), CIRAD (France), Sigma Orionis (France), RedCLARA (Uruguway), Brunel University (UK) and UbuntuNet Alliance (Malawi).
Sigma Orionis is very proud to join the TANDEM team and be part of such a promising project. Sigma is equally involved in the Sci-GaIA project and can thus contribute efficiently to the two projects’ ultimate objective to strengthen and support cooperation with Africa and to promote connectivity and global e-Infrastructure services.
